Covid-19 Cleaning Guidelines for Care Homes 2021

COVID-19 Deep cleaning guidance in Care Homes

These guidelines are intended for both general cleaning and for disinfecting areas that have been exposed to a person who is ill with COVID-19. Areas in which a person with a confirmed COVID-19 infection has previously spent time need to be disinfected before resuming their use. These cleaning guidelines can also be applied in general cleaning to prevent the spread of communicable diseases and protect cleaning staff from infections.

Deep cleaning is a more enhanced programme of environmental cleaning, which compliments the routine daily cleaning in a care home. It includes the thorough cleaning of all surfaces, floors, soft furnishings and re-useable equipment either within the whole environment or in a particular area, e.g. resident’s room. The deep clean must only be performed by staff whom have been trained in the use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), and in line with the current Public Health England (PHE) and national guidance.

Colour coding

All care home facilities are recommended to adopt the national colour coding scheme for cleaning materials (see below). All cleaning items, e.g. cloths, mops, buckets, aprons, should be colour coded.

Equipment required for a deep clean

The golden rule for cleaning is to always work from the cleanest area toward the dirtiest area, and from top to bottom, covering all surfaces using a ‘S’ shaped pattern, taking care not to go over the same area twice. This will greatly reduce the risk of cross contamination. PPE should always be worn, e.g. disposable gloves, apron and eye protection.

Upon completion of the deep clean

  • Removing PPE as per PHE guidance before leaving the room.

  • Ensure all PPE is disposed of in double bagged, tied waste bags

  • Dedicated or disposable

Please note: this guidance is of a general nature. Employers should consider the specific conditions of individual places of work and comply with all applicable legislation, including the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.

Regular cleaning plays a vital role in limiting the transmission of COVID-19.

Infection prevention and control in care homes

Deep cleaning is a more enhanced programme of environmental cleaning, which compliments the routine daily cleaning in a care home. It includes the thorough cleaning of all surfaces, floors, soft furnishings and reuseable equipment either within the whole environment or in a particular area, e.g. resident’s room.

Care home cleaning services

Healthcare environments such as care homes are subject to strict healthcare cleaning standards and legislation surrounding the quality of hygiene that must be maintained.

We can provide specialist medical deep cleaning for healthcare establishments to help maintain a high level of hygiene and minimise the risk of infection, supporting you in protecting your employees’ health and maximising the quality of patient care.

We offer a range of services to help you protect your patients and employees.

We provide comprehensive deep cleaning to disinfect all areas and use Ultra Low Volume (ULV) disinfection fogging, which uses extremely small droplets of a disinfectant that can settle on top of and on the sides of many objects and inaccessible surfaces that may not be reached using conventional cleaning methods. We offer a range of services to suit your disinfection and healthcare cleaning needs.

Keeping Clean

Keeping a care home clean and hygienic is crucial. We have a duty to look after the most vulnerable in our society and we are currently busy assisting with Deep cleans and Builders cleans of care homes, hospitals and other temporary accommodation settings for the NHS during this critical time.

Care Home and Nursing Home cleaning demands professional experience as extra care and a specific set of procedures need to be followed. Our teams will sanitise the entire premises from top to bottom using certified products and chemicals. All areas are cleaned including wiping the ceilings and walls, dusting high level areas and wiping vents, lights, etc, cleaning any furniture such as bed frames, as well as windows, all surfaces, skirting boards and flooring.

Special attention is paid to touchpoint areas such as door handles, taps, banisters, etc and extra care is given to deep clean bathroom and kitchen or food prep areas.

Carpets are washed and sanitised while hard flooring is scrubbed and cleaned using a professional rotary machine and then mopped over with specialist Antiviral products.
