Reopen your Gym Leisure Centre Swimming Pool Covid-Secure

Reopening Guidance for Cleaning and Disinfecting Gyms and Leisure Centres

Indoor gyms, pools and sports centres get green light to open from July 25

Indoor Gyms, swimming pools and sports facilities will reopen in England from July 25, the Culture Secretary has announced. Leisure centres and indoor gyms, along with swimming pools and other indoor sports facilities, have been closed since Saturday 21 March as part of measures to prevent the spread of coronavirus. Today’s announcement follows a recent visit by government, Sport England and public health officials, led by Deputy Chief Medical Officer Professor Jonathan Van-Tam, to a series of ukactive member sites. This allowed officials to see first-hand how the sector is preparing to reopen safely.

Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden said:

  • The reopening of gyms is the news millions across the country have been waiting for with many people desperate to jump on a spinning bike or dive into a pool.

  • Our comprehensive guidance will ensure gyms, pools and leisure centres have the support they need to reopen safely for their customers and staff.

  • Helping people return to gyms safely will also help the nation get match-fit to defeat this virus.

At Ashley Cleaning Services we can help keep your staff and members safe by staying on top of your cleaning schedules and adding new preventative measures.

LATEST Press release

The latest Government guidance includes advice for providers of pool, gym and leisure facilities on cleaning, social distancing, and protection for staff to help venues get back up and running safely.

Before reopening

Objective: To make sure that any site or location that has been closed or partially operated is clean and ready to restart, including:

  • an assessment for all sites, or parts of sites, that have been closed, before restarting work

  • cleaning procedures and providing hand sanitiser, before restarting work

Keeping the workplace/facility clean

Objective: To keep the workplace clean and prevent transmission by touching contaminated surfaces.

Steps that will usually be needed:

  1. Maintaining good ventilation in the sport or gym/leisure facility. For example, opening windows and doors frequently, where possible.

  2. Frequent cleaning of work areas and equipment including stationary gym equipment between use, using your usual cleaning products.

  3. Frequent cleaning of objects and surfaces that are touched regularly, including stationary gym equipment, free weights, mats, balls, etc.

  4. Providing spray and cloths and instructions for users to wipe down each machine after use to users of stationary gym equipment. Whilst operators will wish to increase the frequency of normal or enhanced cleaning of touched surfaces, the only means of minimising contact transmission is cleaning of equipment after every user. Therefore, materials for self-cleaning of handles and rails after use (in line with normal practice) is essential and signage should emphasise to users that this is a duty to others as they dismount/disengage from equipment.

  5. Maintaining current rigorous cleaning procedures, reviewing and adapting where necessary including in increased high-risk spaces including main thoroughfares, touch points and walls and floors in circulation routes (corridors, lifts, foyers, landings, stairs, lobbies).

  6. Clearing workspaces and removing waste and belongings from the work area at the end of a shift.

  7. If equipment cannot be cleaned after each use, it should not be used.

  8. If you are cleaning after a known or suspected case of COVID-19 then you refer to the specific guidance.

Ashley Cleaning Prevention Control Services

  • Cleaning removes germs, dirt, and impurities from surfaces or objects. Cleaning works by using soap (or detergent) and water to physically remove germs from surfaces. This process does not necessarily kill germs, but by removing them, it lowers their numbers and the risk of spreading infection.

  • Disinfecting kills germs on surfaces or objects. Disinfecting works by using chemicals to kill germs on surfaces or objects. This process does not necessarily clean dirty surfaces or remove germs, but by killing germs on a surface after cleaning, it can further lower the risk of spreading infection.

  • Sanitising lowers the number of germs on surfaces or objects to a safe level, as judged by public health standards or requirements. This process works by either cleaning or disinfecting surfaces or objects to lower the risk of spreading infection.
